The University of Regina's women's volleyball team pushed it to five sets after falling down 2-1 in the match, but Saskatchewan was able to pull out a 15-10 win in the deciding frame to come up with the win on Friday night in a big Canada West match in Saskatoon.
The Cougars opened up the match with a 25-19 win after jumping out to a big lead early in the first, only to see Saskatchewan reply with 25-20 and 25-23 wins in the next two sets to jump into the lead. Regina was again dominant early in the fourth, leading 9-1 and 12-2 on its way to a 25-16 victory to send the match to a fifth set.
But in that fifth it was the U of S that claimed the early lead. Emily Koshinsky and Taylor Annala both had extended serving runs as Saskatchewan went up 11-4, and though the Cougars scored six of the next seven points the Huskies put an end to the run and clinched the win with Koshinsky's match-leading 16th kill.
Koshinsky also led all players with 20 digs for Saskatchewan, which improves to 7-6 on the year with the win. Georgia Hurry added 10 kills and five blocks for the Huskies, while Annala had nine kills and nine digs.
The Cougars see their conference record fall to 5-8 on the season, though they remain among four five-win teams battling for the final Canada West postseason spot.
Ashlee Sandiford had 12 kills and nine digs for the Cougars, while
Satomi Togawa had 38 assists and 16 digs and
Haley Wagar came off the bench to provide 10 kills while hitting .318 in three sets played.
The two teams will meet again on Saturday night in another important midseason battle. First serve is set for 6:00 at the Physical Activity Complex in Saskatoon.
