Zak Zborosky's third period hat trick led the University of Regina men's hockey team to a 6-3 win and weekend sweep of the Manitoba Bisons on Saturday.
The Bisons led 2-0 after the opening 20 minutes but it was all Cougars from there, as Regina got goals from Zborosky,
Tyler King,
Brennan Riddle and
Corwin Stevely.
King and
Arthur Miller both had three-point nights for the Cougars, as Miller picked up three assists and King had a goal and two helpers.
Kamerin Nault had a pair of goals for the Bisons while Adam Henry added a single.
Dawson MacAuley earned his second win of the weekend, stopping 18 Bison shots as the Cougars improve to 2-3-1. Dasan Sydora got the nod in net for Manitoba, making 34 saves including 16 in the second period.
Nault and Henry scored in the first period for the Bisons, with Nault's first of the season coming just over six minutes in to the contest and Henry scoring with less than ninety seconds left in the frame.
After a quiet start to the second period the Cougars finally struck. King scored his third of the season at the 15:07 mark from Zborosky and
Tristan Frei before Riddle notched his first as a Cougar with a quick shot that beat Sydora.
Tate Coughlin and King assisted on Riddle's marker as the Cougars evened the score after the second period.
The third period was the Zborosky show, as the second-year forward scored all three of his goals in a seven-minute span. Zborosky, who hadn't found the net through three Canada West games this season, picked up the natural hat trick with goals at 7:34, 10:08 and 14:20.
Zborosky's first was a one-timer from
Jordan Burns with Miller picking up an assist as well. The second came on the powerplay with helpers from Miller and King, and the third was an unassisted marker with a top-shelf rocket.
Manitoba would get one back, as Nault potted his second of the afternoon at 15:21, but Stevely would ice it for the Cougars with a late empty-netter. Stevely's first of the season came shorthanded with 32 seconds left, as
Keith Anderson was in the box for hooking and the Bisons had Sydora out for an extra attacker.
The Cougars, who earned their first weekend sweep since November of 2016, will get set to face the Saskatchewan Huskies in a home-and-home series next weekend.
