Game Recap: Women's Hockey |

Cougars claw back for last-minute victory

It took over 59 minutes for the University of Regina women's hockey team to find the net but late heroics from Lilla Carpenter-Boesch and Tamara McVannel propelled the Cougars to a double-overtime victory over the Calgary Dinos on Friday night.

The Dinos led Friday's game for more than 58 minutes thanks to an early marker from Laine Grace, but a big goal from Carpenter-Boesch with 50 seconds to play forced overtime, and a sharp wrist shot from McVannel in double overtime gave the Cougars the win.

Jane Kish was the winning goaltender, racking up 28 saves for her fourth win of the Canada West season as the Cougars improve to 4-5-1-1. Kelsey Roberts was peppered with shots in between the pipes for the Dinos, making 41 saves on the night.

Grace's goal came just 67 seconds into Friday's contest, as a quick shot from the circle beat Kish blocker side. The rest of regulation was a back-and-forth struggle with little offence. The Cougars totalled 12 shots in each of the second and third periods, but Roberts was up to the task.

The Cougars finally broke through with Kish out of the net and less than a minute on the clock. After what seemed like an eternity in the Calgary end, Carpenter-Boesch netted her first goal of the season off assists from Emma Waldenberger and Jaycee Magwood.

The first overtime period passed quickly, but the three-on-three extra frame paved the way for a Cougar victory. McVannel (pictured) was the hero, walking in and lifting a wrist shot over the shoulder of Roberts with just 40 seconds to play to complete the improbable comeback.

The two teams will square off again on Saturday afternoon, with puck drop at 3 p.m. local time.
