Ashlee Sandiford lit it up for the Regina Cougars with 19 kills, but it wasn't enough as the No. 1-ranked Calgary Dinos took a three-set win in a Canada West women's volleyball match at the Jack Simpson Gym in Calgary.
While Calgary won it in straight sets, two of the three needed to go beyond the standard 25 points - and the Cougars had set points in both of those. Regina used a late 4-1 run to go up 24-23 in the first as the Cougars were looking for an opening-set victory for the second straight night, but Calgary replied with a 4-1 run of its own that was finished off by a Hannah Tanasichuk kill that gave the home side a 27-25 victory.
After Calgary took a 25-18 win in the second, the Cougars had three set points in the third set as they looked to extend the match. But the Dinos evaded all of them, and clinched the match on a block by Kate Pexman and Autumn Davidson that gave Calgary a 29-27 victory.
Sandiford's total of 19 kills ties a school record for the most in a three-set Canada West match, equalling Meagan Onstad's 19 kills that the former outside hitter had in a win over Brandon back during the 2009-10 season. Sandiford, who hit .277 on Saturday, also had eight digs and three blocks.
Pexman had a double-double for Calgary, finishing with 16 kills and 11 digs while hitting a match-high .424 in the win. Kennedy Snape had a team-high 14 digs for the Dinos.
Diana Lumbala added 13 kills for the Cougars, while third-year setter
Satomi Togawa notched her third double-double of the season with 38 assists and 14 digs.
Taylor Ungar led all players with 19 digs for the U of R.
The Cougars (2-4) will now enjoy four consecutive home matches starting next Friday and Saturday against Thompson Rivers. They'll then match up with UBC on Nov. 15 and Nov. 16 to close out the four-match homestand.
