Cougars drop double-overtime duel

The University of Regina women's hockey team fell 4-3 in double overtime against Mount Royal University at the Flames Community Arena on Friday night.

Breanne Trotter was the hero for MRU, scoring the winner a minute and 23 seconds into the second extra frame. Daria O'Neill, Nicolette Seper and Tatum Amy also scored goals for the home team, which improves to 6-7-1-1 with the win. Regina falls to 5-6-1-3.

Emma Waldenberger had two goals and an assist for the Cougars, while Tamara McVannel scored her third of the year on a slapshot in the first period.

Jane Kish made 19 saves in goal for the Cougars. Zoe De Beauville stopped 24 shots between the pipes to earn the win.

After McVannel's goal gave the Cougars a 1-0 lead after the opening 20 minutes, Waldenberger doubled the lead 36 seconds into the second period. Goals from Amy and Seper minutes later evened the score, but again Regina crawled in front with Waldenberger's sixth of the Canada West campaign.

The home side tied the score once again, with O'Neill's second of the year coming midway through the third period. After a busy first overtime with chances for both sides, Trotter ended the game with her fifth goal of the season.

The Cougars and MRU will battle again on Saturday afternoon at the Flames Community Arena.
