Game Recap: Women's Hockey |

Cougars suffer heartbreaking loss against Dinos

The University of Regina women's hockey team was on the wrong end of a 3-2 overtime decision against the Calgary Dinos on Friday night, in a crucial matchup with the Canada West playoffs looming.

The two teams were tied in the standings entering the night, but after the overtime finish on Friday the Dinos take a one-point advantage for the sixth-and-final conference playoff spot.

Things could be looking grim for the Cougars if it wasn't for Emma Waldenberger's goal with just two seconds left in regulation, ensuring the Cougars earned at least a point.

Goals from Delaney Frey and Diane Hitchings had the Dinos up 2-1 late in the third but Waldenberger was able to put one home from the doorstep at the 19:58 mark of the third to force an overtime period and rob the Dinos of a three-point night. Kylee Kupper had the other goal for Regina, scoring her second of the season midway through the second period.

Regina had a powerplay opportunity in the overtime period after Tori Stebnitsky was called for hooking, but the Cougars failed to register a shot with the advantage. With just 17 seconds left in the first overtime period Paige Michalenko spotted Kate Lumley in front, and the fifth-year forward put away her third of the season.

The Cougars outshot Calgary 40-20 on the night, including 13-6 in the third period. Kelsey Roberts earned the win in net, making 38 saves for her third win in as many starts against Regina this season. Morgan Baker stopped 17 Dino shots in net for the Cougars.

Regina and Calgary will face off in another critical battle on Saturday afternoon, with puck drop set for 3 p.m. local time.
