Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Early strike leads MacEwan to win over Cougars

A goal off the foot of Raeghan McCarthy just 42 seconds into Sunday's match proved to be the winner as the hometown MacEwan Griffins rolled to a 3-0 win over the University of Regina women's soccer team.

Meagan Lamoine and Brittany Costa also had goals for MacEwan, as the Griffins move to 2-1-1 on the season and Regina drops to 1-3-0.

The Cougars had trouble generating quality chances against a strong MacEwan defence, tallying four shots on goal for the match. Kyra Vibert had two, while Nikita Senko and rookie Grace Miller each had one. The Griffins countered with nine shots on goal, six of which were stopped by Ashton Lowry.

"I think we actually had a few dangerous chances, the difference was we didn't want to take them," said Regina head coach Bob Maltman. "Full credit to MacEwan. They've got some great players, they're very well coached."

Regina also totalled 11 fouls on the afternoon, while MacEwan only drew three from referee Lorenzo Antonello.

Next up for the Cougars will be a weekend at home with Mount Royal University and the Alberta Pandas paying a visit to the U of R Field. Both games are scheduled for noon kickoffs with MRU visiting on Saturday and Alberta in town on Sunday.
