The University of Regina's women's volleyball team started out the 2018-19 season over the weekend at the University of Regina Invitational, with the Cougars compiling a 2-3 record at the seven-team non-conference tournament.
The Cougars outlasted Winnipeg for a five-set win in the opening match, winning the first set by a decisive 25-13 score before the Wesmen came away with wins in the second and the third. But the Cougars stormed all the way back, winning 26-24 in the fourth and finishing off Winnipeg with a 20-18 win in the fifth.
After a five-set loss to Alberta on Friday night and a four-set setback to Manitoba on Saturday afternoon, the Cougars got back in the win column against Brandon on Saturday evening. They started out the match with 27-25 and 25-16 wins before the Bobcats came back with a win in the third, but a 25-20 victory for the Cougars in the fourth set gave them the match.
Regina finished off the tournament with a four-set loss to Trinity Western, which rolled through the weekend with a perfect 5-0 record.
The Cougars will continue the non-conference schedule next weekend at the Unruh Realty Invitational hosted by Winnipeg. They'll square off with Brandon, Winnipeg, and Moncton before the medal round begins.
