The No. 9-ranked University of Regina's women's basketball team held Thompson Rivers scoreless for nearly an entire quarter in the second half as the Cougars pulled away for a 75-52 road victory over the WolfPack at the Tournament Capital Centre.
The teams were separated by just three points at halftime as Regina took a 39-36 lead into the break, but the Cougars took complete control of the game when the TRU offence dried up following a Brooklyn Golt bucket that made it a five-point game with five and half minutes to go in the third. Thompson Rivers didn't get their next points until over four minutes into the fourth, snapping a scoreless drought that spanned nine minutes and 38 seconds.
When it was all said and done, the Cougars scored 20 straight points as part of a game-changing 26-2 run that locked up their 12th win of the Canada West schedule.
"We talked about playing playoff basketball tonight, and I was very unhappy with how flat we came out for this one," Cougars head coach
Dave Taylor said. "This isn't the time of year when we can be satisfied with playing just one good half, and we'll need to start playing 40-minute basketball immediately."
Kyanna Giles had another double-double for Regina, her second in a row and fifth of the season. She scored a team-leading 13 points and set a new career high with 16 rebounds, while
Macaela Crone scored nine points and pulled down 11 rebounds. Post players
Christina McCusker and
Angela Bongomin also hit double figures in scoring, with McCusker ending up with 11 points and Bongomin scoring 10 in just 12 minutes off the bench.
The Cougars (12-3) held a massive edge on the glass, finishing with a 68-38 rebounding advantage as they improved their winning streak to three games.
Leilani Carney led Thompson Rivers (4-11) with 13 points.
The two teams will meet again on Saturday night at the TCC in Kamloops. Game time is set for 5:00 (PST).
