Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Cougars pull away in fourth to complete road sweep over TRU

Myles Hamilton sparked a big fourth quarter for the University of Regina's men's basketball team as the Cougars took an 84-77 win over Thompson Rivers on Saturday night at the Tournament Capital Centre.

Hamilton scored 10 of his 22 points in the fourth and scored each of the U of R's final four field goals to help the Cougars pull away down the stretch. Thompson Rivers took a four-point lead into the final quarter, but the Cougars held the WolfPack scoreless for the first five minutes as they opened the fourth on a 9-0 run.

The weekend sweep is huge for the Cougars, who improve to 12-4 with the win. With just two weekends to go on the Canada West schedule, the Cougars are in contention to host either a play-in game or a conference quarterfinal series in February.

"It was a pretty contested battle just like last night," Cougars head coach Steve Burrows said. "We got a couple breaks in the fourth quarter and we got our nose ahead, and that was really the difference. Both of these games could have gone either way."

Hamilton finished 9-of-11 from the field and also had seven rebounds to go along with his 22 points. Samuel Hillis matched him with a 22-point performance and also tied for the game high with eight rebounds, while Carter Millar and Nick Barnard both had nine points.

Joe Davis and Michael Rouault both had 18 points for Thompson Rivers, which falls to 6-10 with the loss.

The Cougars have four critical games remaining on the schedule, starting next weekend with road games at Winnipeg (11-5) on Friday and Saturday. They'll then close out the conference slate home games against Saskatchewan – which currently holds the fourth-best RPI in Canada West – on Feb. 1 and Feb. 2.

NOTES: Brayden Kuski got his first career start for the Cougars ... Kuski moved into the starting lineup in place of Greishe Clerjuste, who was injured in Friday's win.
