The University of Regina's women's basketball team pulled away from Victoria in the second half for an 85-50 road win over the Vikes as Canada West play resumed on Friday.
The Cougars led by only eight points at halftime, but blew the game wide open with an 11-0 run early in the third quarter which featured seven points by
Macaela Crone alone. Regina outscored Victoria by a 28-13 margin in the third and then 21-9 in the fourth, helping the Cougars improve their conference record to 9-2 on the season.
"I thought it was our best defensive effort of the season in terms of following the game plan and staying mentally engaged," Cougars head coach
Dave Taylor said. "We had some good looks that we just weren't finishing in the first half, but we started hitting them in the second."
Crone (pictured) put together her finest game as a Cougar, going 10-for-12 from the field and leading all players with 24 points while also putting up 11 rebounds. Both of those totals were also career highs for Crone, while the Cougars also got a huge game off the bench from
Angela Bongomin who piled up 14 points and 13 rebounds for a huge double-double in just 15 minutes on the floor.
Kyanna Giles,
Carolina Goncalves, and
Christina McCusker all added 10 points for the Cougars.
Amira Giannattasio and Ashlyn Day both had 10 points to lead Victoria, which falls to 6-5 on the season.
The Cougars and the Vikes will finish off the weekend series on Saturday night in Victoria. Game time is set for 5:00 (PST).
NOTES: The Cougars have now won seven consecutive Canada West games and 10 in a row overall including the three wins at last week's Wesmen Classic ... Regina is now 17-5 against U SPORTS opposition this season.
