The University of Regina's men's basketball team suffered an 83-80 loss to the Victoria Vikes on Saturday night in a Canada West game in Victoria.
After trailing for almost the entire game and by as many as 12 points in the second half, the Cougars had one last chance to tie it after a late Victoria turnover gave them the ball with eight seconds remaining. But
Myles Hamilton's contested three-pointer from the top of the key hit back iron, and though the rebound ended up with
Kameron Vales his tough turnaround three at the buzzer fell just short to seal the win for Victoria.
The Vikes duo of Scott Kellum and Jordan Charles combined for 44 points, with Kellum going 6-for-12 from three-point range to lead all players with 23. Charles ended up with 21 points for Victoria, while Jake Newman added 12 points and eight rebounds and Aaron Tesfagiorgis finished with 10 points.
Victoria, now 5-7, will play host to a strong Fraser Valley (10-4) team next Friday and Saturday.
Both Hamilton and
Greishe Clerjuste finished with 20 points for Regina. Clerjuste was 6-for-10 and hit all three of his attempted three-pointers, while Hamilton was 7-for-14 from the field. Millar also hit double figures in scoring, collecting 13 points while pulling down a team-leading seven rebounds.
The Cougars fall to 8-4 on the season with the loss.
Regina will now prepare for its penultimate home weekend of the conference schedule as the Cougars will entertain UBC Okanagan at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport next Friday and Saturday. The Heat will come into that weekend series sporting a 5-9 record, which has them very much in contention for a Canada West postseason berth.
