The University of Regina's women's basketball team won both of its games over the weekend at the Cougar Thanksgiving Invitational, as the Cougars registered wins over Alberta and New Brunswick at the non-conference tournament at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport.
The Cougars opened up the tournament with a 67-54 win over Alberta on Friday afternoon, taking control of the game with a 12-0 run in the third quarter which featured a three-point play by
Emily Dewey and then triples by
Faith Reid,
Macaela Crone, and
Kaitlyn Tonita while the Pandas were held scoreless for four and a half minutes.
Reid hit five three-pointers and finished as the game's leading scorer with 16 points, while Dewey finished with 11 points and Tonita scored 10. Jenna Harpe and Vanessa Wild both had 12 for Alberta.
In Sunday's tournament finale, the Cougars trailed for almost the entire game but scored nine of the game's final 11 points to end up with a 53-50 win over New Brunswick.
The Reds led by double digits on two occasions in the second quarter and after a Katie Daley three-pointer in the third, but the Cougars were able to respond with eight straight points including back-to-back three-pointers by Crone and
Avery Pearce to help keep the game close.
Crone not only had a game-high 16 points, but pulled down 11 rebounds and piled up five blocks.
Michaela Kleisinger added 11 points and six assists for Regina, while Mikaela Dodig scored 12 points for UNB in the loss.
UNB also suffered losses in the tournament's other two games. The Reds dropped an 87-56 decision to Saskatchewan on Friday afternoon and lost 74-48 to Alberta on Saturday.
The Cougars will finish off their preseason schedule with two away games. They'll take on Canada West foe Trinity Western in a non-conference game on Oct. 23 before heading down to California for an exhibition against San Diego State on Oct. 27.
