Two second-half goals lift Pandas to 2-1 win over Cougars

The University of Alberta Pandas scored twice in the second half to come away with a 2-1 road victory over the Regina Cougars on Saturday afternoon at the U of R Field.

An own goal in the 83rd minute by the Cougars turned out to be the difference. With the game deadlocked at 1-1, Brenna Mattiello sent in a cross from the right that found the foot of Kiera Fujimoto about six yards out from the Regina net. Regina defender Jessica Gaudet tried to clear Fujimoto's chip with a header, but the ball went over the outstretched arm of goalkeeper Kylie Bolton for what would turn out to be the game-winning goal.

The Cougars held a 1-0 lead at halftime thanks to an early goal from Sydney Langen. The fifth-year forward took a nice pass from Kyra Vibert in the 18th minute that put her into the clear, and she tucked the ball into the top corner for her fourth goal of the season.

Regina held onto that lead until the 69th minute. Mattiello sent in a long, high ball into Fujimoto in the box, and Fujimoto was able to collect it and chip it over Bolton to notch her third of the year.

Alberta improves to 6-2-5 with the win. The Pandas can still finish anywhere from second to fourth in the Prairie Division standings, and can assure themselves a home playoff game with a win over Saskatchewan on Sunday combined with a draw or loss by the Huskies against MacEwan on Saturday.

Regina (3-7-3) will finish either fifth or sixth in the Prairie Division depending on the U of R's match against MacEwan on Sunday and Lethbridge's road game at Manitoba on Saturday. The Cougars and Griffins square off at noon at the U of R Field.
