Game Recap: Women's Hockey |

Mount Royal hangs on for 2-1 win over Cougars

The University of Regina's women's hockey team suffered a tight 2-1 loss to Mount Royal on Friday night in Canada West women's hockey action in Calgary.

The game was scoreless through 40 minutes before Mount Royal struck twice in the first seven minutes of the final period. Breanne Trotter notched the game's opening goal 47 seconds into the third and Victoria Byer added another at 6:23 to put MRU up 2-0.

The Cougars scored with a minute left with starting goalie Jane Kish pulled for an extra attacker. Merissa Zerr tipped a Jaycee Magwood pass right to Tamara McVannel in the high slot, who ripped home her first of the season to get the Cougars to within one.

But the Cougars couldn't get the equalizer, as Mount Royal held on for the three-point win to improve to 4-3-0-0 on the season.

Regina (1-5-1-0) will get another crack at Mount Royal on Saturday afternoon in Calgary. Puck drop is set for 3:00.

NOTES: The Cougars held a 21-16 advantage in shots ... both teams were 0-for-5 on the power play.
