Game Recap: Women's Hockey |

Cougars suffer shutout loss in season opener

The University of Regina women's hockey team was blanked 2-0 by the Calgary Dinos in the opening game of the 2019-20 Canada West season in Calgary on Friday night.

Two third-period goals from the home side were the difference, and Kelsey Roberts stopped all 17 Cougar shots to earn the shutout in goal. Elizabeth Lang and Sara Craven were the goal scorers for the Dinos.

The first Calgary goal came at the 8:12 mark of the third period, with Lang taking a feed from Craven and beating Baker after she had made the save on a Dinos point shot. Craven's goal found the net with just 59 seconds on the clock, killing any chance of a Cougar comeback.

Calgary outshot the Cougars in every period, the most significant of which was the second frame when they out-chanced Regina 16-4. Morgan Baker made 34 saves in goal for the visitors.

Jaycee Magwood paced the Cougars with three shots, while Chelsea Hallson, Kaitlyn Crowe, and rookie Heather Fiske had two apiece.

The Cougars will go for the split on Saturday afternoon, with puck drop set for 3 p.m. at Father David Bauer Arena.
