The University of Calgary Dinos earned an opening weekend sweep of the Regina Cougars with a 4-2 win on Saturday afternoon at the Father David Bauer Arena.
Â
The Dinos scored four goals in the second period to secure their first 2-0 start since 2012. Elizabeth Lang scored a pair and finished the weekend with three goals on theseason.
After a slow start to the afternoon, the Dinos got their best chance halfway through the first period on a two-on-one for Delaney Frey and Sara Craven. Cougars goaltender
Morgan Baker was caught committing to Frey but the Regina defencewas able to prevent Craven from getting a good stick on the puck.
Â
Regina netted the game's first goal 13 minutes in when
Jaycee Magwood fired a shot past a screened Kelsey Roberts, taking a 1-0 lead into the first intermission despite being outshot by the Dinos 12-7.
Â
The Dinos came out flying in the second and wasted no time tying the score 22 seconds into the frame as Craven made a cross-ice pass over to Lang who deked out the Cougars netminder before sliding the puck into an empty cage.
Â
Calgary took their first lead of the game with the man advantage after a hit from behind that resulted in a game misconduct for Cougars defenceman
Shaelyn Vallotton. Providing traffic in front of the net, Lang got the final piece of the puck as it went past Baker for her second tally.
Â
The Dinos extended their lead just over a minute later when Holly Reuther navigated her way through traffic in the neutral zone and fired a wrist shot home over the blocker side of Baker.
Â
"I was trying to make a cross-ice pass to Taylor [Beck] which got a little deflected so I managed to pick it up and went wide on the defence and luckily the far side of the net was wide open," said Reuther when asked about her goal.
Â
The scoring onslaught continued moments later when
Paige Hubbard gathered her own rebound from behind the net and passed it out front to
Lilla Carpenter-Boesch to narrow the gap to 3-2.
Â
The Dinos registered the fourth of four goals in a two-minute span at the 9:47 mark of the middle frame. Frey fired a backhander on Baker which created a rebound for Craven to poke the puck in to restore the two-goal advantage.
Â
After a five-goal second period, both teams played a tighter third frame as neither found the back of the net.
Â
The Dinos are on the road next weekend where they will face the UBC Thunderbirds, while the Regina Cougars return home to play the Lethbridge Pronghorns.
