Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Cohee, Shephard lead UBC to season-opening road win over Cougars

Jadon Cohee and Grant Shephard scored a total of 43 points and shot a combined 75% from the field to help lead the UBC Thunderbirds to an 83-72 win over the Regina Cougars in Canada West men's basketball action on Friday night at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport.

Cohee tied for the game high with 24 points and was 8-for-12 from the field, while Shephard was a near-perfect 7-for-8 from the field and finished with 19 points in the win. Manroop Clair added 11 points, seven assists, and six rebounds for the Thunderbirds, who led by as many as 25 points in the second half.

UBC (1-0) used a big push in the third quarter to pull away for good. The Cougars were still within 14 points midway through the period, but UBC scored on six of the next seven possessions as part of an 11-0 run which built up the biggest lead of the game. The Cougars scored the final eight points of the game, but the outcome had long since been decided.

The Cougars (0-1) only turned the ball over 13 times compared to UBC's 16 miscues, but were done in by cold shooting as they hoisted a school-record 43 three-point attempts during the game but only hit nine. Regina's Josiah Thomas was 8-for-15 from the field including 5-for-11 from three-point range to tie Cohee with 24 points, while Carter Millar finished with 14 points and 10 rebounds to register a double-double.

The two teams will meet again at the CKHS on Saturday night following the women's game. Tip-off is set for 8:00.
