Michaela Kleisinger had a triple-double as the University of Regina's women's basketball team sprinted to a big 92-46 victory over the Winnipeg Wesmen on Friday night in a Canada West game at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport.
Kleisinger scored 12 points, pulled down 11 rebounds, and added 11 assists to register the first ever triple-double by a U of R player in a Canada West game. Her total of 11 assists also ties the school record for most assists in a Canada West game.
"Michaela had a big game, and getting a triple-double is definitely unique," Cougars head coach
Dave Taylor said. "We did a good job against a depleted Winnipeg team, but even with all their injuries we know they're going to be a tough challenge tomorrow."
The Cougars held a 44-27 lead at halftime, but simply exploded in the third quarter. They scored the first 16 points of the third and outscored Winnipeg 33-8 in the period to take a complete stranglehold on the game.
Faith Reid scored a game-high 20 points for the Cougars (2-3) with all six of her field goals coming from three-point range.
Madeleine Tell added 15 points, while both
Macaela Crone and
Emily Dewey scored 12. Crone also led all players with 12 rebounds, while Dewey finished with nine rebounds and seven assists.
Alexi Rowden also broke into double figures, ending up with 10 points.
Robyn Boulanger had 12 points for Winnipeg, which falls to 2-3 with the setback.
The two teams will finish off the weekend series on Saturday night at the CKHS. Game time is again set for 6:00.
