The Regina Cougars completed a weekend sweep with an 86-78 win over the University of Winnipeg on Saturday at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport.
Carter Millar registered his fourth double-double in six conference games for the Cougars, scoring a team-high 23 points and leading all players with 11 rebounds to help Regina to its third consecutive victory.
Regina's win came despite a 28-point effort by Winnipeg's D.J. Dixon, who also led the Wesmen with eight rebounds.
The Cougars had to overcome a significant Winnipeg lead for the second consecutive night. While Friday's win came courtesy of a fourth-quarter comeback, the U of R's big push on Saturday came in the second. Winnipeg had built up a 28-18 lead before the Cougars came to life, as the home squad finished the first half on a 21-5 run.
The Cougars led by double digits for much of the second half. The closest Winnipeg came in the fourth was when a Dixon bucket brought the Wesmen to within six with just under two minutes to go, but that turned out to be Winnipeg's final field goal of the night.
Besides Millar's double-double, Regina also got 15 points from
Josiah Thomas in just 12 minutes on the floor. Millar also had seven assists, while
Benjamin Hillis dished out a team-high eight.
Adam Benrabah and Billy Yaworsky also scored in double figures for Winnipeg (2-4) with 14 points and 10 points, respectively. The Wesmen will now prepare for a home-and-home series next weekend against a Manitoba team that went into Saturday night still perfect in conference play.
The Cougars will head up Highway 11 next weekend for two games against No. 6-ranked Saskatchewan.
