In what was a wild, seesaw affair the Regina Cougars suffered a 93-89 overtime road loss to No. 5-ranked Saskatchewan on Friday night in a Canada West men's basketball game in Saskatoon.
The Cougars trailed by three points late in regulation, but were able to tie it up after a layup by
Samuel Hillis and a free throw by Hillis after
Josiah Thomas stole the ensuing inbounds pass. The second free throw hit back iron to send the two teams into overtime tied at 80-80, but Saskatchewan led for all of the extra session. The Cougars had one last chance to tie it up after getting the ball with under 10 seconds to go and trailing by three, but a turnover sealed the win for the Huskies.
Alexander Dewar and J.T. Robinson led Saskatchewan (5-0) with 22 points and 19 points, respectively. Emmanuel Akintunde had 17 points and 10 rebounds, while Maxwell Amoafo scored 13 points and Kessler Bishop led all players with 21 rebounds for the Huskies.
Carter Millar had another double-double for Regina (3-4) with 18 points and 14 rebounds, while four other Cougars scored in double figures. Thomas finished with 17 points,
Brayden Kuski had 15,
Samuel Hillis had 14, and
Benjamin Hillis scored 13.
While it was Saskatchewan that ended up with the win, the game was all Cougars in the early going. They finished the first quarter on a 12-2 run that gave them a 30-16 lead after the opening period, then scored 10 consecutive points early in the second quarter to give them a 21-point advantage at 40-19. But the Huskies answered back with a massive 18-2 run before halftime, cutting the Regina lead to five at the break.
The Cougars' huge lead evaporated completely in the third when Saskatchewan went on an 18-5 stretch to take its first lead since the opening minutes of the game. The two teams traded leads three times in the fourth quarter before the Hillis free throw sent the game into overtime.
Regina and Saskatchewan will close out the weekend series on Saturday night (7:00) in Saskatoon.
