Keylyn Filewich's double-double helped UBC to a 74-56 win over the Regina Cougars on Saturday night, completing a road sweep for the Thunderbirds as both teams opened up the Canada West schedule this weekend at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport.
Filewich led all players in both scoring and rebounding, finishing with 22 points and 10 rebounds while shooting 11-for-17 from the field.
The Cougars led for the first few minutes as both teams got the offence going in the early going, but UBC went on an 11-1 run in the first quarter and led the rest of the way. The Thunderbirds outscored Regina in all four quarters as they held a 27-20 lead after one, a 41-29 advantage at halftime, and a 61-46 lead through three. Any chance at a Cougar comeback went away when the U of R was held scoreless for a seven-minute stretch in the fourth, allowing the UBC lead to balloon to over 20.
Besides the double-double from Filewich, UBC also got 13-point efforts from both Hailey Counsell and Jessica Hanson. Hanson also pulled down seven rebounds and chipped in with five assists for UBC, which will head into next weekend's home games against Calgary with a 2-0 record.
Emily Dewey led the Cougars in scoring for the second straight night, finishing with 15 points.
Macaela Crone added 10 points and six rebounds for Regina.
The Cougars will now have a short week to prepare for an unusual Thursday/Friday series at Mount Royal. They'll take on the western Cougars on Thursday morning at 11:00 and on Friday at noon.
