Cougars open strong, but lose in four to Calgary

Beth Vinnell's 17 kills helped lift the Calgary Dinos to a four-set victory over the Regina Cougars as the visitors collected their first conference win of the season on Friday night at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport.

Vinnell's total of 17 kills led all players and they came on just 28 attacks as the fifth-year middle hit an even .500 in the win.

"This is definitely the most complete match we've played all season and I'm obviously very happy with the result," Dinos head coach Natalie Gurnsey said. "We had to make some pretty strong blocking commitments and ensure that we did a good job against a couple of their hitters, and I feel like we did that tonight."

The match started out in Regina's favour as Calgary (1-8) hit just .026 in the first set and the Cougars jumped out to an early lead with a 25-19 win in the first set.

But from about the middle of the second set on, it was all Dinos. They won 25-16 in the second set, 25-18 in the third, and clinched the win with a 25-13 win in the fourth. Calgary hit over .400 as a team in two of those sets, including in the second where they had a .429 hitting percentage.

Adding to Vinnell's performance was Autumn Davidson, who ended up with 12 kills as the two starting middles for Calgary combined for 29 on the night. Trinity Solecki added 11 kills and 11 digs, while Lexi Peart had 41 assists and 14 digs and libero Kennedy Snape led all players with 20 digs.

Jessica Lerminiaux had 12 kills and hit .231 for the Cougars, who fall to 1-8 with the setback. Diana Lumbala added 10 kills, while Emma Matheson had eight kills and no errors on 16 attacks for a .500 hitting percentage.

The two teams will meet again on Saturday night (6:00) at the CKHS.
