Bailee Bourassa scored early in the third period to break a 2-2 tie and Elizabeth Salyn's goal later in the final frame stood up as the winner as the Saskatchewan Huskies took a 4-3 road win over the Regina Cougars on Saturday night at The Co-operators Centre.
Jadyn Kushniruk's goal with three minutes remaining got the Cougars back to within one, but the U of R wasn't able to find the equalizer and the Huskies held on for a three-point regulation victory.
Chelsea Debusschere and Rachel Lundberg also scored for the Huskies, who move to 6-4-1-3 with the victory.
Besides Kushniruk's third-period marker, Regina (3-8-3-0) also got goals from
Jaycee Magwood and
Paige Hubbard.
Saskatchewan opened up the scoring just past the five-minute mark of the first period. Courtney Cormack's slap shot was stopped by Baker, but the rebound went high in the air and landed on the stick of Debusschere who knocked it home for her first of the year.
The Cougars responded with just a couple minutes left in the opening period off a nice individual effort by Magwood to send the two teams into the first intermission tied at 1-1. Regina went up 2-1 shy of the seven-minute mark of the second after
Paige Hubbard banged home a rebound, but the Huskies tied it up with a power play goal off a Lundberg shot from the high slot.
Bourassa's goal came under two minutes into the third with helpers from Emily Upgang and Lundberg, with Salyn's unassisted goal giving Saskatchewan a two-goal advantage with just under seven minutes left in regulation.
The Cougars are back at home next weekend for a pair of games against Calgary at The Co-operators Centre, while Saskatchewan will also be at home with two games on the docket against Mount Royal.
