Wild leads Pandas to win over Cougars

The University of Alberta Pandas completed a weekend road sweep and pushed their win streak to four after a 63-57 victory over the Regina Cougars on Saturday at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport.

Alberta led from wire to wire and by as many as 13 points, but the Cougars hung around and gave themselves a chance down the stretch as they held the Pandas to just one field goal in the final six minutes of the game. But the Cougars weren't able to get it down to a one-possession game, and Vanessa Wild and Jenna Harpe both hit a pair of free throws in the final 20 seconds to seal the win.

Wild ended up with a game-high 25 points, going 9-for-14 from the field and hitting both of her attempts from three-point range. Megan Tywoniuk was the only other Panda in double figures, ending up with 13 while playing a team-leading 34 minutes.

The win improves Alberta's record to 8-2 on the season as the Pandas continue to sit in third place in the Canada West standings behind undefeated Calgary and Saskatchewan. Alberta will have December off before returning to the Canada West schedule the second week of January at home against UBC Okanagan.

Emily Dewey led the Cougars with 18 points despite spending much of the game on the bench saddled with foul trouble. She did most of her damage from the line, where she was 10-for-12 on the night. Michaela Kleisinger added 15 points and seven rebounds, while Alexi Rowden added 13.

The Cougars return to Canada West play with a pair of road games against Lethbridge on Jan. 3 and Jan. 4. Their first home games of the new calendar year will be against Brandon on Jan. 10 and Jan. 11.
