Paige Hubbard's goal late in the first period stood up as the only one of the contest as the Regina Cougars took a 1-0 road win over the Manitoba Bisons on Friday night at the Max Bell Arena in Winnipeg.
With five minutes to go in the opening period,
Kaitlyn Crowe fed a beautiful cross-crease pass over to Hubbard. Hubbard made no mistake on the one-timer, giving the rookie her first career goal. It wasn't officially a power play marker, but Hubbard's goal came just seconds after a Manitoba minor had expired.
Jane Kish did the rest between the pipes for the Cougars, making 24 saves to notch her school-record ninth career shutout.
Manitoba outshot the Cougars 24-17 in the contest and was 0-for-4 on the power play, while Regina was 0-for-3 with the advantage.
The three-point win for the Cougars (2-6-1-0) moves them ahead of Manitoba for seventh place in the Canada West standings. Regina will go for the weekend sweep over the Bisons on Saturday afternoon (2:00).
