After the two teams split the opening two sets, the Manitoba Bisons pulled out victories in the third and the fourth to finish up with a 3-1 win over the Regina Cougars on Friday night in Canada West women's volleyball action at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport.
Kearley Abbott and Allison Alcock both had 11 kills to help lead Manitoba (1-4) to its first conference win of the season, while Alcock also led all players with seven blocks in the win.
Manitoba hit .400 as a team while cruising to a 25-14 victory in the first set, but the Cougars pulled out a 25-23 win in a second set which featured 10 tie scores and four lead changes.
And it looked like the Cougars were well on their way to claiming the third set after going up 16-9 at the technical timeout, but Manitoba scored four straight points coming out of the break to start a 13-3 run which put them into the lead for good. The Bisons won the third by a 25-23 count, then held the Cougars to a zero hitting percentage in the fourth set and claimed the match with a 25-17 win.
Second-year libero Jordan Hamm had a match-high 15 digs for Manitoba while Sydney Booker and Kelsey Jordan split the setting duties and finished with 22 and 20 assists, respectively. Rookie middle Jaidyn Spencer didn't start but was a key contributor off the bench with six kills on just seven attacks.
Jessica Lerminiaux had a team-leading 12 kills for the Cougars, while
Brittany Rousseaux sparked the U of R off the bench with a career-high 10 kills while hitting .304 for the match.
Sierra Parris-Kruger collected 14 digs for Regina, which falls to 1-4 with the setback.
The two teams will meet again on Saturday night (6:00) at the CKHS.
