The University of Regina women's hockey team fell 5-0 to the UBC Thunderbirds in the opening game of a Canada West quarterfinal series at the Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Sports Centre in Vancouver on Friday night.
Five different scorers found the net for UBC, with Emily Costales and Ashley McFadden scoring in the first period before Madison Patrick, Emily Moore and Hannah Clayton-Carroll had tallies in the second period.
Morgan Baker got the start in net for the Cougars, but was chased from her cage after Moore's goal early in the second. Baker stopped 13 of 17 shots she faced before Jane Kish came on and made 11 saves. Tory Micklash got the win for the T-Birds, making 17 saves.
Costales opened the scoring roughly six minutes in with a wrist shot that snuck through Baker, and McFadden put home a rebound on the powerplay late in the first. Patrick found a rebound of her own early in the second period, and five minutes later Moore netted yet another second chance to make it 4-0. Clayton-Carroll added the finishing touches shortly after, roofing a shot over a sprawling Kish.
The third period opened up for the Cougar attack, but Micklash was able to make a few clutch saves to preserve her shutout, including a point-blank blocker stop on Ireland South. The home side killed off two Cougar powerplays in the final frame to keep Regina off the scoreboard.
The Cougars will look to even the series with their season on the line in Game 2, which is scheduled for a 4 p.m. PST start.
