The University of Regina's women's volleyball team kept its impressive winning streak intact on Friday night, defeating the Manitoba Bisons in straight sets at the Investors Group Athletic Centre on the U of M campus.
Now winners of nine consecutive games, the Cougars improve their Canada West record to 15-8 with the victory.
The most pivotal part of the match might have come late in the first set. Manitoba had just seven straight to take a late three-point advantage, but the Cougars closed out the set on a 7-1 run to win it 25-22. The Cougars scored each of the set's final five points, including the last four with substitute
Brittany Rousseaux serving.
The Cougars were dominant in the next two sets, taking 25-17 and 25-18 wins to put away the match.
Brooklyn Reynolds was dominant at the net for Regina, putting down seven kills with a .312 hitting percentage and leading all players with seven blocks.
Ashlee Sandiford led the way with a match-high 10 kills for the Cougars and also added nine digs, while
Jessica Lerminiaux and
Emma Matheson both had eight kills.
Taylor Ungar led all players with 18 digs, while
Satomi Togawa finished with 31 assists and seven digs.
Manitoba (11-10) was led by Laura Findlay's eight kills.
The Cougars continue to occupy fourth place in the Canada West standings but weren't helped out on the out-of-town scoreboard on Friday as Alberta (15-6) made quick work of UBC Okanagan at home and UBC (14-7) also won in straight sets over Winnipeg. Two of Regina, Alberta, and UBC will host quarterfinal series, with the other finishing as the No. 5 seed and hitting the road for the first round of the playoffs.
Regina and Manitoba will finish off the weekend series on Saturday night in Winnipeg. First serve is scheduled for 5:00.
