Game Recap: Women's Hockey |

Clayton-Carroll leads T-Birds to win over Cougars

The University of Regina women's hockey team surrendered three goals in the third period as the No. 10-ranked UBC Thunderbirds skated to a 6-1 win at the Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Sports Centre on Friday night.

Hannah Clayton-Carroll was the star for UBC, scoring a hat trick with a goal in each period. Ireland Perrott scored twice, and Emily Costales had a single as Mathea Fischer chipped in with three assists. The lone goal for the Cougars came in the second period off the stick of Elise Endicott.

The Thunderbirds scored on four out of seven powerplay opportunities in the game, while the Cougars were 0-for-4 with the advantage. All three of Clayton-Carroll's goals came on the powerplay and were assisted by Fischer.

After Perrott and Clayton-Carroll scored goals in the first period, Endicott brought the Cougars within one midway through the second. Endicott's second of the season came after Jordan Kulbida won a draw and Lilla Carpenter-Boesch flipped the puck to the point. Shaelyn Vallotton ripped a shot that Endicott was able to get a piece of to deflect it under the pad of Tory Micklash.

It was all UBC from there, however, as two markers from Clayton-Carroll stretched the lead to 4-1 and Perrott and Costales sealed the deal midway through the third period.

Micklash was the winning goaltender, stopping 15 shots. Jane Kish made 22 saves for the Cougars.

The Cougars and UBC will close the Canada West regular season on Saturday afternoon, with puck drop slated for 2 p.m. local time as the Cougars continue to jostle for playoff positioning.

With Friday's results, the Cougars and Mount Royal both have 34 points in the Canada West standings, making them even for fifth place. The higher-seeded team will visit the Saskatchewan Huskies in a conference quarterfinal while the lower-seeded squad will head to Vancouver to take on UBC.
