The University of Regina's men's hockey team went to Winnipeg over the weekend for two non-conference games against the Manitoba Bisons, winning 4-3 in a shootout on Friday before losing 2-1 on Saturday afternoon.
Â
FRIDAY RECAP
Conner Chaulk's late-game heroics helped the Cougars score their first non-conference win of the season in what was a wild affair on Friday night. Five of the game's six goals in regulation were scored in the third, and three of those came in the final four minutes of the final period.
Â
Set up by
Tristan Frei and
Arthur Miller, Chaulk's goal tied up the game at 3-3 with just over a minute left and came exactly 60 seconds after Manitoba's Adam Henry had given the Bisons a late one-goal advantage. Henry's goal itself was scored just after a
Tanner Campbell goal only a minute earlier as the two teams combined for a three-goal barrage in a span of just 2:12.
Â
Chaulk then scored the lone goal of the shootout, with
Brandon Holtby making all three saves to secure the victory. Holtby also made 22 saves in regulation after taking over midway through the second period for
Curtis Meger, who stopped all five shots he faced.
Â
SATURDAY RECAP
Turner Ripplinger scored the U of R's lone goal of the game in a 2-1 loss to Manitoba. The Bisons got second-period goals from both Geordie Keane and Matthew Stanley, while goalies Jeremy Link and Riley Lamb combined to stop 25 of 26 shots for Manitoba.
Â
Dawson MacAuley went the distance between the pipes for the Cougars, stopping 32 of Manitoba's 34 shots.
Â
NEXT UP
The Cougars will host their home openers next weekend against Calgary as Canada West play gets underway. The U of R and the Dinos will face off on Friday night (7:00) and Saturday afternoon (3:00) at The Co-operators Centre.
