Three first-period goals powered the Calgary Dinos to a 8-1 win over the University of Regina men's hockey team at The Co-operators Centre on Friday night.
Seven different scorers found the net for the Dinos, as Matt Alfaro scored twice and Mitch Cook, Luke Harrison, Jordan Xavier, Coda Gordon, James Shearer and Kaden Elder notched singles.
Ben Duperreault replied for the Cougars, who drop to 0-1-0.
Matthew Greenfield made 18 saves for the Dinos.
Dawson MacAuley stopped 29 shots at the other end of the ice.
Cook opened the scoring just past the three-minute mark of the first period, as a long snapshot from the point found its way through traffic and beat a screened MacAuley. After a quiet chunk of play in the middle of the frame, Harrison found himself alone in front and added to the lead after taking a pass from Xavier. Xavier notched another two minutes later with a quick wrist shot after streaking down the left wing.
The start of the second period was plagued with penalties, but the Dinos added to their lead at the 11:04 mark thanks to Gordon. The fifth-year worked the puck out from along the boards, weaved into the slot and slipped a low shot under the pad of MacAuley. Alfaro added a shorthanded marker minutes later, picking up a steal and beating the Cougar netminder five-hole on the breakaway.
Regina got on the scoreboard early in the third on a nice play that Duperreault finished off.
Connor Odelein went around a Dino defender on the right side and slid a smooth pass to the slot, where Duperreault got enough of it to tip it past Greenfield.
Scott Mickoski also earned an assist on the goal for his first point as a Cougar.
The Dinos answered shortly later with a powerplay goal from Shearer, set up by a cross-ice feed from Graham Black. Alfaro's second of the game was also set up by Black, who registered his fourth helper of the night on the goal. Alfaro finished with four points himself, adding two assists.
The Cougars and Dinos will face off again on Saturday afternoon, with puck drop set for 3 p.m. at The Co-operators Centre.
