Sydney Langen and
Olivia Gables both scored twice as the University of Regina's women's soccer team cruised to a 4-1 victory over Winnipeg on Sunday afternoon at a cold and blustery U of R Field.
Langen's first marker came just four minutes into the game. Regina rookie
Sierra Kolodziej sent in a nice cross from the right side that Langen volleyed into the back of the net, giving the Cougars an early lead and giving the fifth-year veteran her second goal of the campaign.
Â
Winnipeg deadlocked the game at 1-1 in the 39th minute when the Wesmen were awarded a penalty kick after Shae-Lynn Dodds was fouled inside the Regina box. Alycia Mann stepped up to the spot and made no mistake, but the Cougars responded in a big way before halftime. The home side regained the lead on a near-carbon copy of the first goal, with Kolodziej putting in another nice cross from the right which Langen finished off for her third of the season. And Regina wasn't done there, as rookie
Olivia Gables struck in injury time to give the Cougars a 3-1 advantage at the half.
The Cougars dominated play in the second half and added one more in the 86th minute.
Jet Davies sent a ball up to Gables at the top right corner of the box, and after shaking loose from her defender Gables blasted one into the left side of the net to end any hopes of a late Winnipeg comeback.
Â
The victory gives the Cougars a season sweep over Winnipeg, as they also defeated the Wesmen in Winnipeg in what was the season opener for both teams earlier this month. Regina improves to 2-4-2 with the win as the Cougars now sit with eight points and in fifth place in the Prairie Division standings.
QUOTABLE: COACH MALTMAN
"I think we knew that we maybe left some points on the table yesterday, and we had a good team meeting about it this morning. We knew we'd already had some success against this team this season and if we connected better, had better control of the ball, and had some more forward thinking out there we'd have a good chance at a result. Full credit to our women, it wasn't a great day out there. Bubnick and Davies were both phenomenal in the midfield and then obviously it was nice to see Gables come off the bench and pot a couple goals." - Regina head coach
Bob Maltman.
NEXT UP
Both teams are on the road next weekend. Winnipeg will face MacEwan and Alberta, while the Cougars will travel to MacEwan and Lethbridge.
