Jordan Kulbida scored the only goal of the night and
Jane Kish sparkled in net with a 34-save shutout as the University of Regina's women's hockey team took a 1-0 road win over UBC on Friday night in Vancouver.
Kulbida's goal, which came near the midway mark of the third period, was made possible by an aggressive forecheck by
Lilla Carpenter-Boesch which forced a turnover in the UBC zone. Kulbida took possession by the right boards, danced around a Thunderbirds forward, and snapped a shot low blocker side for her sixth goal of the season.
Kish did the rest.
The fifth-year goalie stopped 11 shots in the first period, 11 in the second, and 12 more in the third to notch her fourth shutout of the season. Kish's total of four shutouts this year is tied for the most in school single-season history, a record originally set by Carmen Lizee in 2003-04 and matched just last season by Kish.
The Cougars have now started out 2020 with three consecutive road victories as they continue the momentum from last weekend's sweep at Lethbridge. They've collected eight out of a possible nine points in those three games as the Cougars improve to 5-10-4-0 on the season. And thanks to Lethbridge's loss to Saskatchewan, Regina now holds the sixth and final playoff position in the Canada West standings.
The two teams will finish up the weekend series on Saturday afternoon (2:00 PT).
NOTES: The shutout was the 12th of Kish's career as she continues to add to her school record total ... no other goalie in U of R history has more than eight shutouts.
