The University of Regina's women's hockey team continued its hot start to 2020 as the Cougars won their fourth consecutive road contest with a 3-0 victory over UBC on Saturday afternoon at the Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Sports Centre in Vancouver.
Chelsea Hallson scored what turned out to be the game-winning goal midway through the second, and that stood as the only one of the contest until both
Paige Hubbard and
Jordan Kulbida added empty netters late to seal the win.
Jane Kish made 18 saves to notch her second consecutive shutout and her school-record fifth of the season, breaking the old mark of four which she shared with Carmen Lizee. Kish now has 13 career shutouts, also an all-time U of R mark.
The loss extends the T-Birds' (7-9-1-3) losing streak to eight games, while the Cougars (6-10-4-0) vault into fifth place in the Canada West standings with the victory.
Following a scoreless first period, both sides came out aggressively to start the second as both Regina and the Thunderbirds hunted for the first goal of the game.
The Cougars opened scoring at the 9:55 mark of the middle frame off a nice zone entry by
Jordan Kulbida, fresh off scoring the winning goal the night before. Kulbida fed Hallson whose backhander took a wicked deflection to get past Tory Micklash and into the UBC net, Hallson's first of the season.
The home team piled on the pressure late in the period but were not able to register a clear-cut chance as Regina held them to the outside.
With UBC desperately needing a goal in the third, they were gifted a power play but were once again unable to convert despite numerous chances.
"Huge for us, essentially a 12 point weekend," said Regina head coach
Sarah Hodges. "We needed to come in and play well in what is always a tough place to play, and we did so."
The Thunderbirds are back on the road next weekend visiting the Manitoba Bisons. The Cougars return home for the first time in 2020 as they'll play host to the Mount Royal Cougars with key playoff positioning on the line.
