Jaycee Magwood and
Martina Maskova scored for Regina to give the University of Regina women's hockey team a 2-1 win over the visiting Mount Royal University Cougars on Friday evening at The Co-operators Centre.
The Regina Cougars improve to 7–10–4-0 on the season. Now riding a five-game winning streak, the U of R is tied with Mount Royal in the standings and battling for fourth place.
Neither team was able to find the back of the net in the first period, as
Jane Kish and Cassie Shokar made 4 and 8 saves respectively.
Magwood opened up the scoring with her team-leading tenth goal of the season at the 18:05 mark in the first period. Mount Royal defenders pressured
Tamara McVannel, who made a backhand pass down to Magwood in the Mount Royal zone. Magwood carried the puck into the slot and rifled a wrist shot beating Shokar's glove.
Ten minutes later, Regina extended their lead to 2-0. Maskova battled behind the Mount Royal net, passing the puck out to
Ireland Sorestad, who took a wrist shot on net that Shokar blocked. Shokar's rebound fell in front of the crease, and Maskova lunged for the puck knocking it into the net while falling.
Emma Bergesen responded for Mount Royal midway through the third period. Bergesen took a wrist shot on net and then corralled her rebound, firing it into the back of the net to make it a one-score game.
Mount Royal played aggressively throughout the rest of the third period, pulling Shokar with 1:16 left in the game, while they had opportunities, they were unable to beat Kish.
Kish made 9 saves for Regina in the victory, while Shokar stopped 22 of Regina's shots.
Regina and Mount Royal will battle again on Saturday afternoon (3:00 p.m.) at The Co-operators Centre.
