The University of Regina's men's hockey team completely erased a three-goal deficit, but fell in double overtime as Mount Royal scored on the power play with a minute left in the second extra session.
The Cougars trailed 2-0 after the opening 20 minutes and went down 3-0 when MRU scored six minutes into the second, but the U of R rallied. The visitors got on the board on a
Tanner Nagel goal that was set up by
Conner Chaulk following a brilliant backcheck by
Bryce Platt that broke up a Mount Royal 3-on-1, then Chaulk himself scored on the power play with a rocket from the top of the right circle that went bar down.
Arthur Miller tied it up with six minutes to go in the third, taking a feed from Nagel and rifling a shot glove side to make it 3-3.
In the second overtime, the Cougars went down 4-on-3 after
Isaac Schacher was assessed a double minor after inadvertently clipping an MRU player with a high stick. Mount Royal scored on a goalmouth scramble with a minute left to give the home side the win and the extra point in the standings.
Brandon Holtby was again solid in net for Regina. Mount Royal peppered him with 53 shots, but he saved 49 as Holtby increases his save percentage to .920 for the season.
The Cougars (6-9-3) continue to sit in sixth place in the Canada West standings with 15 points. UBC also has 15 points thanks to a 6-2 drubbing over Manitoba on Friday night, but Regina holds the tiebreaker over the Thunderbirds on head-to-head results.
Regina and Mount Royal will close out the weekend series on Saturday afternoon (3:00 MT/4:00 SK) at the Flames Community Arena in Calgary.
