Game Recap: Women's Hockey |

Kish's sixth shutout leads Regina to a sixth straight win

The University of Regina's women's hockey team recorded its sixth straight win, with a 2-0 victory over the visiting Mount Royal University Cougars on Saturday afternoon at The Co-operators Centre.

The Regina Cougars improve to 8–10–4-0 on the season. Now riding a six-game winning streak, the U of R has jumped into fourth place in Canada West leapfrogging Mount Royal in the standings. Mount Royal falls to 9-12-1-0 and is now on a four-game losing streak.

Merissa Zerr scored what would turn out to be the game-winning goal midway through the first period, while Shaelyn Vallotton extended Regina's lead to 2-0 with a goal in the second period. Both of Regina's goals came on the power play.

Jane Kish made 16 saves to record her sixth shutout of the season, adding to the school-record that she claimed last weekend against UBC for most shutouts in a season. Kish now also has 14 career shutouts, an all-time U of R mark.

Zerr opened up the scoring with her third goal of the season at the 6:14 mark in the first period. Hannah Pennell took a wrist shot from the point, which Zerr tipped passed the Mount Royal goaltender. Lilla Carpenter-Boesch also recorded an assist on the play.

Vallotton added Regina's second power-play goal midway through the second period. Tamara Mcvannel and Kaitlyn Crowe passed the puck back and forth, waiting for space to open up in front of the net while Vallotton screened the goaltender. Crowe eventually saw an opening and took a quick shot on net, which Vallotton deflected into the back of the net.

Mount Royal wasn't able to find their groove in the third as Regina's defensive play only allowed four shots on net in the period.

Regina will be at home next weekend, hosting the Manitoba Bisons. Mount Royal will return to home ice to battle against the Lethbridge Pronghorns.
