Elise Endicott scored two goals and Paige Hubbard added one as the University of Regina's women's hockey team extended its win streak to seven games with a 3-0 victory over the visiting University of Manitoba Bisons on Friday night at The Co-operators Centre.
The Regina Cougars collected their 35th point while improving to 9-10-4-0 on the season. Manitoba's record now falls to 5-15-2-1 with the loss.
Jane Kish made 18 saves while recording her second straight shutout and seventh of the season – an all-time U of R mark.
Endicott scored what would turn out to be the game-winning goal early in the first period. A Manitoba defender was handling the puck behind their net when Endicott swooped in, stole the puck, and took it to the front of the Bisons net for a quick backhand goal.
Hubbard extended Regina's lead to 2-0 less than two minutes later. Heather Fiske attempted to bring the puck into the Bisons zone but was tripped in the process. The puck bounced up to Hubbard who took a quick wrist shot, hitting Manitoba goalie Amanda Schubert before rolling into the back of the net.
Neither team was able to find twine in the second period as Kish and Schubert made six and eight saves, respectively.
Manitoba played aggressively in the third period, initially pulling Schubert with 5:19 left in the game, however a whistle near the Bisons zone led to her returning to the ice. Schubert was removed for a second time with 4:29 remaining and this time the Cougars capitalized. With three minutes remaining, Jaycee Magwood passed the puck over to Endicott for an easy empty-net goal, sealing the Cougars victory.
Regina and Manitoba will battle again on Saturday afternoon (3:00 p.m.) at The Co-operators Centre.
