Game Recap: Women's Hockey |

Win streak snapped at seven as Manitoba defeats Cougars

Jordyn Zacharias and Kate Gregoire scored for the University of Manitoba Bisons who won 2-1 over the University of Regina women's hockey team on Saturday afternoon at The Co-operators Centre.

The loss is the first for the Cougars in the new year after an impressive seven-game winning streak that catapulted them into fourth place in Canada West.

Erin Fargey stood her ground in net for the Bisons, making 29 saves to help Manitoba improve to 6-15-2-1 on the season. Jane Kish made 12 saves for the Cougars (9-11-4-0).

The Bisons struck first less than five minutes into the first period. Gregoire was bringing the puck into the Cougars zone when she saw Zacharias open with speed. Gregoire passed the puck to Zacharias, who took a quick wrist shot which beat Kish blocker side.

Regina responded with a power-play goal early in the second period to tie the game up at 1-1. Jaycee Magwood took a slap shot from the point which hit Shaelyn Vallotton, who backhanded the puck by Fargey.

Manitoba retook the lead with a goal at the 11:39 mark in the second period. Gregoire sped into the Cougars zone and missed the net with a wrist shot, but the puck bounced off the glass and off Molly Kunnas' leg and into Kish's crease. Chaos then ensued as eight players battled for the puck in the crease and, with Kish sprawled out on the ground, Gregoire located the puck and flicked it into the back of the net to give the Bisons at 2-1 lead.

Regina was on the attack in the third period, outshooting the Bisons nine to four, but were unable to beat Fargey.

The Cougars will return to action with a road series at the University of Alberta on Jan. 31 and Feb. 1. Manitoba will also be on the road next weekend with a pair of games at Saskatchewan.

NOTES: Magwood now only needs two points for 100 in her career, where she would join Brandy West and Erin Tady as the only Cougars in history to achieve that mark.
