Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Cougars open strong, but lose in four to Huskies

The University of Regina's women's volleyball team started out strong with a 25-22 win in the opening set, but the Saskatchewan Huskies took the next three to take a 3-1 win on Friday night in a Canada West match at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport.

The turning point of the match was likely late in the second set when Saskatchewan was able to evade a Regina set point that could have given the Cougars a two-set lead. Instead, the Huskies collected the next three points to win 27-25 and then took 25-21 and 25-22 victories in the third and the fourth to claim their 11th Canada West win of the season.

While Saskatchewan had three different players with double-digit kills, it was libero Shae Beaulieu that stole the show. Already ranked second in the conference in both digs and digs per set heading into Friday's match, Beaulieu piled up 30 of them over the four sets.

Olivia Mattern led Saskatchewan (11-6) with 12 kills and also added 11 digs for a double-double, while Emily Koshinsky had 11 kills and Mandi Fraser finished with 10. Fraser also had a match-high seven blocks for the Huskies.

Regina (2-15) actually outhit the Huskies, finishing with a .187 hitting percentage compared to .163 for the visitors. Jessica Lerminiaux had a solid night for the Cougars, leading all players with 17 kills while hitting .235 and registering a team-high 14 digs. Britt Davis had 11 kills and eight digs, while Emma Matheson finished with 10 kills.

The two provincial rivals will meet again on Saturday night (6:00) at the CKHS.
