Game Recap: Women's Hockey |

Cougars record comeback victory in Lethbridge

Jenna Merk scored the only goal in the shootout as the University of Regina's women's hockey team secured a 3-2 comeback victory over Lethbridge on Friday night at the Nicholas Sheran Arena in Lethbridge.

The Cougars trailed 2-0 after the opening period, but got a power play goal from Jordan Kulbida in the second and tied up the game with just two minutes left in regulation on another power play goal courtesy of Shaelyn Vallotton.

After a scoreless pair of five-minute overtimes, Merk's goal came in the third round of the shootout on a nice deke that she finished off with a backhand to the top corner. That was all the Cougars needed in the shootout, as Jane Kish stopped all three Lethbridge attempts to secure the road win.

The Cougars, who have won all four of their overtime games this season, improve to 3-10-4-0 and pull to within six points of sixth-place Lethbridge in the Canada West standings.

Besides the three saves in the shootout, Kish stopped 21 of 23 Lethbridge shots including four in the second five-minute overtime alone. Adela Juzkova and Hannah Pennell both had assists on Kulbida's goal, which came following a rebound off a shot from Juzkova. Jaycee Magwood and Kaitlyn Crowe assisted on Vallotton's late equalizer, which also came off a rebound.

The Cougars ended up with a 40-23 advantage in shots on goal. The visitors peppered Lethbridge goalie Alicia Anderson with 18 shots in the third period alone as the Cougars searched for the game-tying marker.

The two teams will meet again on Saturday afternoon (3:00 MT/4:00 SK) in Lethbridge.
