Game Recap: Women's Hockey |

Cougars complete weekend sweep with 3-1 win over Lethbridge

The University of Regina's women's hockey team scored once in each period as the Cougars took a 3-1 victory over Lethbridge that completed a weekend sweep for the U of R over the Pronghorns.

Jaycee Magwood and Shaelyn Vallotton both had a goal and an assist in the win for the Cougars. Vallotton's goal came on the power play late in the first after she banged home a rebound, while Magwood's wraparound goal four minutes into the second turned out to the game winner.

Merissa Zerr added an insurance marker in the final minute of the game. Her initial shot was wide of the net, but she pounced on her own rebound and chipped it by Lethbridge goalie Alicia Anderson to all but seal the win for the Cougars.

Jane Kish had another solid night between the pipes for the Cougars, stopping 26 of 27 Lethbridge shots to register her second win in as many days and her seventh in 11 starts this season.

Lethbridge's lone goal of the contest came just two minutes in as Mila Verbicky notched her first career goal for the Pronghorns.

"We had a bit of a rough start, but after that we worked hard and played as a team consistently," Cougars head coach Sarah Hodges said. "Getting five points is big in this league. We're putting ourselves in a good position and we'll just have to continue to build off what we did this weekend."

The Cougars' five-point weekend now has them just three points behind Lethbridge for the final playoff spot in the Canada West standings. Regina (4-10-4-0) will play away from home for the second consecutive weekend next Friday and Saturday as they'll head to the West Coast to take on a UBC team that currently sits in fifth place in the conference.
