The University of Regina's women's basketball team trailed Lethbridge nearly the entire game and by as many as 13 points, but their comeback was answered with a late run by the Pronghorns that gave the home side a 73-66 win on Saturday in Lethbridge.
The Cougars made their push with nine straight points, a run that started late in the third quarter and extended into the fourth. That turned what had been a double-digit Lethbridge lead into a two-point game, and the Cougars took their first lead of the night with a
Faith Reid triple just past the midway mark of the final period.
The teams traded leads five more times in the next three minutes.
Madeleine Tell hit another three to give the Cougars the lead with three minutes remaining, but that would be the U of R's last field goal until the final seconds of the contest. Lethbridge went on a 10-2 run in that time, going 6-for-6 from the line in the final minute to seal the win for the Pronghorns.
Kacie Bosch finished with a double-double for Lethbridge, scoring 22 points and adding 14 rebounds in the win. Asnate Fomina scored 15 points, while Jessica Haenni (12) and Katie Keith (10) also scored in double figures.
Macaela Crone scored a team-high 21 points for the Cougars and tied
Michaela Kleisinger and
Alexi Rowden for the team lead with eight rebounds. Tell hit a career-high four triples and finished with 13 points, while Kleisinger scored 10.
The Cougars (4-8) will return home next weekend for a pair of games against Brandon. They'll tip off against the Bobcats at 6:00 on both Friday night and Saturday night at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport.
