Madison Willan and Autumn MacDougall both scored for the No. 5-ranked Alberta Pandas as they collected a 2-0 win over the Regina Cougars on Saturday afternoon at Clare Drake Arena in Edmonton.
Willan scored the game's opening goal midway through the second period and MacDougall's Canada West-leading 16th goal of the season gave Alberta some insurance three minutes into the third.
While they were swept by Alberta, the Cougars (9-13-4-0) will still head into the final weekend of the Canada West schedule in sole possession of fourth place in the conference standings, one point up on both Mount Royal and UBC.
Making her 12th consecutive start for the Cougars,
Jane Kish made 21 saves in the loss. Halle Oswald stopped 18 saves to register the shutout for Alberta, which now boasts a Canada West-leading total of 56 points as the Pandas sit atop the standings with a six-point cushion over second-place Calgary.
The Cougars how have a huge final weekend upcoming as they look to fend off MRU and UBC and hold on to fourth place in the standings and earn the right to host the No. 5 seed in a best-of-three quarterfinal series. The Cougars will play a home-and-home against third-place Saskatchewan, while Mount Royal and UBC match up against each other in Vancouver.
The U of R and Saskatchewan will meet on Friday night at The Co-operators Centre in Regina and on Saturday night in Saskatoon.
NOTES: The Cougars all but had a playoff berth locked up heading into Saturday's game, but officially clinched a trip to the postseason thanks to Lethbridge's loss to UBC.
