Cougars, Mount Royal to battle in quarterfinal series

The University of Regina's women's hockey team finished fifth in the Canada West standings, which sets up a showdown with fourth-place Mount Royal this weekend in a best-of-three Canada West quarterfinal series.

It's the first time in history that the two Cougar squads have met in the postseason. Regina and Mount Royal split the season series this year, with MRU taking a pair of regulation victories in Calgary back in October and Regina returning the favour with two regulation wins in Regina four weekends ago.

SERIES SCHEDULE
Game 1: Friday, 2:30 PM (MST)
Game 2: Saturday, 2:30 PM (MST)
Game 3: Sunday, 2:30 PM (MST) *if necessary

COACH HODGES ON MOUNT ROYAL
"Mount Royal is a hard-working team with pretty good speed. We have to play a strong team game and we'll need Jane Kish to play the way she has all second half for us. I'd say the MRU players we have to be the most focused on are Anna Purschke and Kaitlyn Ross. Purschke is a strong offensive threat and Ross is a young but solid goaltender who we'll have to work hard to beat."

KEY PLAYERS
Kish enjoyed a sensational Canada West schedule that saw her set University of Regina single-season records in goals-against average (1.39), save percentage (.938), and shutouts (7). Jaycee Magwood is the team's leading scorer, collecting 11 goals and 10 assists for 21 points in 28 games this year as she became just the third player in school history to collect 100 career points.

Purschke had team highs in both goals (11) and points (18) for MRU, while Ross finished second in Canada West in goals-against average (1.14), third in save percentage (.943), and registered four shutouts this year despite only being in her first year out of the Notre Dame Midget AAA program.

ALL-TIME SERIES
Give a slight historical edge to Regina here. Since Mount Royal joined Canada West in 2012, Regina has an 18-14 advantage in the 32 Canada West games played between the two teams. The all-time results favour the home team, with MRU holding a 10-6 record in Calgary but Regina up 12-4 over Mount Royal in the Queen City.

THE BRACKET
The top two teams will sit back and watch the Regina/MRU and UBC/Saskatchewan quarterfinal series, as first-place Alberta and second-place Calgary both earned byes through the opening round of the postseason. Alberta will play host to the lowest-seeded team remaining in the semifinals, so the Regina/MRU winner will play the Pandas if No. 3-seeded Saskatchewan beats No. 6 UBC. If the Thunderbirds win that series, they'll head to Alberta with the Regina/MRU winner set to square off with Calgary.
