The University of Regina's men's basketball team lost its final game of the Canada West schedule on Saturday night, losing 85-74 to the UFV Cascades in Abbotsford.
The loss gives the Cougars a 10-10 conference record for the year and sends them into the postseason as Canada West's No. 9 seed. They'll head to No. 8-seeded Lethbridge for a play-in game next Friday.
Saturday's game turned in favour of the Cascades thanks to a 14-0 run by UFV that was capped by a Parm Bains three-point play that put the home team up 69-57. The Cougars clawed back to within six points with four minutes to go, but Sukhjot Bains hit his fifth of six three-pointers to go back up by nine and UFV cruised to a comfortable 11-point victory.
Sukhjot Bains scored a game-high 24 points for Fraser Valley, which finishes with a 13-7 Canada West record and as the No. 7 seed in the postseason.
Four players scored in double figures for Regina including
Benjamin Hillis, who scored 16 points to lead the team in scoring for the second straight night. Hillis also had eight rebounds and eight assists while
Greishe Clerjuste scored 14 points,
Samuel Hillis had 13, and
Shaquille Harris finished with 12.
The Cougars and the Pronghorns will meet in the postseason for the second time in the last three years, having also matched up during the 2018 conference quarterfinals in Lethbridge. The winners of the four play-in games will be reseeded and will join the top four seeds in the Canada West quarterfinals the following weekend. The quarterfinals and semifinals will be hosted by Alberta and Calgary in two four-team pods.
