Men's basketball adds three as Asher Ndah, Cade Mather, Mina Ogot commit to Cougars

5/21/2020 1:30:00 PM

The University of Regina's men's basketball team announced Thursday that the squad has added three new players as Asher Ndah (Reading Rockets), Cade Mather (Dr. Martin LeBoldus HS), and Mina Ogot (University of New Brunswick) have all committed to the Cougars.

Asher Ndah is a 6-4 guard from the Reading Rockets, a team that plays at the second highest level in England. Reading finished with a 14-9 record in the National Basketball League last year, with Ndah appearing in 17 of those contests and averaging just a shade under 13 minutes played per game. His top outing was in Reading's win over the Bradford Dragons in early December as he hit three three-pointers and registered a season-high 13 points. Ndah also played with the John Madejski Academy in the Elite Academy Basketball League, earning Southern Conference second-team all-star honours after averaging 10.3 points and 6.5 rebounds per game with JMA. He'll enter the U of R's Faculty of Business Administration.

This will be the second consecutive season that the Cougars have received a player from the Reading Rockets. Arinze Emeka-Anyakwo made an immediate impact as a rookie last year at the U of R, starting in six games and averaging in excess of 12 minutes played per game.

"Asher will be a great addition to our program," Cougars head coach Steve Burrows said. "He is a great athlete and a high-character young man that will help us stretch the floor. We know with his background he has been well coached and helps us build the foundation for the future."

Cade Mather is a 6-5 guard from the LeBoldus program in Regina. He won a 5A city championship with the Golden Suns in 2019 and helped LeBoldus advance to the city title game again in 2020, but that game was never contested due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Mather also competed at the provincial level the past two summers, helping Team Saskatchewan to a fourth-place finish at the 2019 U17 National Championship and playing at the U16 level in 2018. Mather was LeBoldus's leading scorer and rebounder this past season, averaging 16.9 points and 9.0 rebounds per game while also leading the Golden Suns with 35 blocked shots in 22 games played. He'll enroll in the Faculty of Kinesiology & Health Studies at the U of R .

"Cade is yet another in the long line of talent out of LeBoldus," Burrows said. "He has great length, shoots the ball well, and is a very good student. We are very excited that Cade is joining us as he'll fit well with our other guys and continue to help us build the culture that we've established here."

Mina Ogot played the last two seasons with the University of New Brunswick but comes to Cougars where he'll join up with his twin brother Ogot Ogot, who spent last season on the U of R bench as a redshirt after transferring from UNB. Mina, who played in 28 games at UNB over his two years with the Varsity Reds, also played with his brother at Archbishop O'Leary High School in Edmonton and at Bull City Prep in Durham, N.C. before the pair reunited at UNB. Mina will enroll in the Faculty of Arts at the U of R.

"We are excited that Mina has decided to join his brother and come finish his career in Regina," Burrows said. "He is a proven U SPORTS player who will provide us with leadership and interior size and strength. We are looking forward to starting to work with him."

The Cougars graduate starters Greishe Clerjuste and Samuel Hillis from last year's roster, but expect to return everyone else including Canada West all-star Carter Millar. Benjamin Hillis, Brayden Kuski, Matt Barnard, Josiah Thomas, Shaquille Harris, Nick Barnard, Emeka-Anyakwo, Nigel Warden, Hayden Collier, and Gregory Rene are all expected back with Ogot Ogot coming off his redshirt year.
