Game Recap: Men's Hockey |

Cougars come up short versus Griffins, lose 5-2

The University of Regina's men's hockey team lost to the MacEwan University Griffins 5-2 on Saturday evening.

MacEwan fowards Brecon Wood and Riley Brandt scored two goals apiece to lead the way for the Griffins. Tanner Nagel scored his third goal of the weekend for the Cougars.

In the first period, both teams played clean 5-on-5 hockey until the Cougars were called for the first penalty of the game. That was enough to swing the momentum for the Griffins as Riley Brandt scored the first of his two goals on the power play. About 30 seconds later, Brecon Wood got the puck on his stick off a weird bounce and put it top-shelf to give Griffins a two goal lead. MacEwan outshot the Cougars 18-9 in the first period.

Early into the second period, Wood scored his second goal of the game. Cougars captain Conner Chaulk responded quickly by scoring from a nice feed by Ben Duperreault. Regina had three power play chances late in the period but could not convert any of them.

Five minutes into the third, Nagel tipped a Tyler Heidt shot to make it a 3-2 game. That would be it for the Cougars as Riley Brandt scored again on the power play to make it 4-2. Jordan Taupert added one more goal for the Griffins late in the game.

Goalie James Porter made 37 saves between the pipes for MacEwan in the victory. He made several nice saves to take away Regina's chances. Curtis Meger made 27 saves in the loss for the Cougars.

Regina will travel to Saskatoon to face Huskies next Friday in a home-and-home series. They will then head back to Regina to play each on Saturday. The Griffins will head home to face the University of Calgary Dinos on Friday and Saturday.
