Huskies score late to secure comeback win over Cougars

The University of Regina men's hockey team fell to the Saskatchewan Huskies 3-2 on Friday night in a Canada West conference game in Saskatoon.

Justin Ball, Chantz Petruic, and Zane Franklin all scored for Saskatchewan, with the goals from Petruic and Franklin both coming in the game's final seven minutes to lift Saskatchewan to a comeback victory.

Tanner Sidaway and Turner Ripplinger both scored for Regina (0-3-0).

Saskatchewan took a 1-0 lead on Ball's goal, assisted by Donovan Neuls, 14:36 into the first frame. The Cougars' second period goal came off a Randen Schmidt shot that was deflected by Connor Odelein and Sidaway, tying the game at 1-1.

In the opening minute of the third, Riley Krane advanced the puck to Tyler Adams and Ripplinger on a two-on-one, beating Saskatchewan's Roddy Ross to take a 2-1 lead. Regina stayed ahead until the 6:13 mark of the third when Connor Hobbs and Jared Dmytriw assisted Petruic's tying goal, and the Huskies took their second lead with Franklin's game-winning goal, assisted by Ball and Neuls.

The Canada West rivals kept it chippy for all 60 minutes, racking up a combined 43 penalty minutes including a boarding major and game misconduct by Saskatchewan's Jeffrey Faith in the final frame. Brandon Holtby saved 28 of 31 shots for Regina and Ross stopped 17 of 19 shots for the Huskies.

Regina and Saskatchewan are back in action tomorrow night (7:00) in a Canada West conference rematch at The Co-operators Centre in Regina.
